substance designer issue

An issue occurred for a user where Substance Designer (SD) would crash upon opening the application.

The initial troubleshooting steps included:

  • Restarting the PC
  • Uninstalling SD and re-installing it.
  • Updating to the latest Nvidia drivers
  • Uninstalling SD, rebooting the PC (to clean the registry) and then re-installing it


    • None of the above worked and SD still crashed upon opening it.

    After doing some research online it looked like the issue might be a registry key.

  • open regedit (in admin)
  • go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Allegorithmic\Substance Designer\5_x\session
  • select the view3d folder
  • delete it
  • restart SD


    • After this was done the user reported that SD was able to be opened without crashing.
